Milking it….. and losing weight.

Now there is one thing that most of us Brits take in some form or other and that’s milk. Be it in butter, cheese, yoghurt or just plain old milk in your tea, but have you ever stopped and thought about why you use milk?

Yes it cools down our tea or wets our cereal in the morning however did you really consider why you use milk?

If you think about it logically, cows’ milk is for calves. It’s provides them with nutrients to feed the young cow and ensure they grow strong and healthy. And there is the issues right there in the last sentence. The word GROW.

Milk is good for you we are told, mainly by the producers (and what used to be the Milk Board) as it’s full of calcium to help keep our teeth and bones nice and strong. But what about the growth hormone in milk? How does that affect us? And is it really natural for adults to be drinking milk, let alone cows’ milk?

Cows milk is naturally full of growth hormone (not to mention the growth hormones which are given to cows to increase their milk production too!) to make sure the little calf grows up into a nice big cow but surely that’s not your intention is it? Not only is milk full of fat but full of growth hormone too and as for cheese…….well that’s loaded with fat! So dairy products provides a ‘double whammy’ for those of you who are desperately trying to lose weight, it provides lots of ‘bad’ fat and then compounds this affect with growth hormones which cause your cells to get bigger and divide.

Unfortunately there is a darker side too to dairy products and the growth hormone. Growth hormones promote cell division in order for the calves to grow which is how it’s supposed to be, it’s natural, however it’s not natural at all for us!

Research conducted by the Institute of Molecular Bioscience indicates that the growth hormone (GH)in cows encourages the growth of breast and prostate cancer. Another study in the “Harvard News Gazette” reported a strong correlation with milk consumption and incidences of testicular cancer in men. GH causes cells to grow; if it causes cells to grow at an accelerated, unregulated pace, it potentially can result in cancer.

So think again before you reach for a glass of milk or that low fat yoghurt. If you are serious about weight loss one of the best ways to shed your excess weight is cut out dairy from your diet along with red meat. You will need to ensure that you find another sources of calcium, although regular pasteurised milk has very little calcium in it, such as spinach and other green leafy veg, almonds (which are packed with calcium), sesame seeds, fish and supplements.

Give up dairy for one month and I assure you that you will lose weight!

I Need A Little Time….

So you want to change? And you want to be slimmer? You want to be more confident, successful? Brilliant!

But you don’t have the time? You don’t know when you can squeeze that exercise in or find the time to actually sit down and eat properly? You’re too busy to think about that right now.

So pardon me for asking, but do you still want to lose weight? Do you still want to be more confident, successful?

Thankfully most of the people who come to see me with help to shed weight or feel better do have the time to make a difference in their lives! If you want to lose weight, be happier then you need to commit yourself to making time for yourself – it’s as simple as that!

Yes life is a lot faster today than it was years ago but if you seriously cannot find the time to make a difference in your life, then ask yourself why? I’m a single mum and life can be very hectic however I can play the victim card and bemoan how ‘I never get any time for myself with the kids’ or I can make time for myself because I know I deserve it. It’s a choice and a choice that sometimes can take a while to comprehend, but never the less, it is your choice.

Time is precious and they say never swap time for cash and it’s true. We can never buy back lost time, no matter how much we pay for it! Life is precious and life is time. It’s about living in the here and now. Not in the past or in the future but right here right now. The only time you can make a difference is now, not yesterday and not tomorrow but now.

Taking time for yourself is one of the easiest ways to feel better, however taking time for yourself does not mean sitting on your bum in front of the TV swigging down a bottle of wine! Taking time for yourself means taking time to appreciate yourself, to do something for yourself, something that you enjoy or perhaps something that can help you unwind such as a relaxing bath or long walk. By spending quality time with yourself you are nurturing yourself and telling yourself that you are worth it. Now that’s got to feel better than ‘sorry too busy’ hasn’t it?

Spend time with the ones you love too, as this can improve your sense of well being. Kids grow quickly don’t they? So take time to enjoy them now, because when they reach their teenage years they spend less and less time with you. I get up early some mornings so that me and the kids can walk a longer way to school because it means I get to spend some quality time with them and I find this one of the best ways to start my days – it certainly beats shouting and rushing to get out of the house on time for school.

How you spend your time is YOUR choice. Yes we need to work and yes we need to feed the kids but come one – you could make time if you really wanted to! Being a martyr isn’t really going to help you feel any better is it and it certainly won’t help your mental and physical welfare either.

Most successful people today attribute their success to ‘taking time out’ – whether that be to meditate, exercise, walk or to pamper themselves – the crucial point is that they value themselves enough to take quality time for themselves.

So next time you hear yourself saying you haven’t got the time to do something that you know will improve your life or make you feel better, then ask yourself why you don’t feel you deserve the time? We all deserve to have fun, to be happy, to succeed and all of these things take time.

So if you want to lose weight then you need to take the time to eat properly and take some form of exercise. If you want to beat the blues then get out of the house and do something fun today! You can make yourself feel a whole lot better if you really wanted to – it takes time – yes, but time that can help you change your life.

So take time now to thing about how you can change your life in some way, how you can help yourself and remember that you are worthy of time and as life is all about time, you are worthy of the best life ever!

Pain – Physical or Emotional?

The next time you experience back ache or a twinge of any nature think about whether it really is a physical pain. Most people assume wrongly that most pain is directly related to a physical issue such as wear and tear or damage and it most cases it rarely is!

Having helped many clients overcome chronic pain (migraines, back ache, shoulder pain) the thing that has most amazed them, apart from their lack of pain, is that the cause of their discomfort was directly related to an emotional ‘wound’ from the past.

Why we hang onto an emotional pain is usually very hard to contemplate, after all if we consciously had a choice to be pain free we would (hopefully) take it however our unconscious mind works slightly differently!

I will give you an example as way of explaining the basis of emotional pain and why we hand on to it. A client of mine came to see me about a recent knee injury that was still bothering her. She had been back and forth to the doctors and had had further x-rays but everything came back clear, which meant technically there was no physical reason for the pain she was still suffering.

When a physical injury has healed and there is still pain then this almost certainly is an emotional pain that you are hanging on to, albeit at an unconscious level.

So I chose to use EFT with this client to work on the pain that she was experiencing using the ‘chase the pain’ method which basically gets the client to focus on the pain and give it a colour, shape, texture etc as when we do this we are disconnecting from the pain. What is very common when doing this exercise is that the pain moves around the body and seems to change character (colour, shape, texture) as well as intensity.

I worked with her for nearly an hour and at the end of the session she was amazed at how much the pain had diminished. She was able to put her full weight on the leg without and major discomfort at all and all we had done was focus on the pain and what it represented to her internally.

Try this exercise and notice how much your pain diminishes after just one round of doing this! Focus on the pain your are experiencing at the moment, close your eyes and really ‘go inside’. Then ask yourself what level is your pain at if 10 was extremely painful and 0 was not at all and once you have got a figure, ask yourself the following questions:
if this pain had a colour, what colour would it be?
if this pain had a shape, what shape would it be?
if this pain had a texture, texture would it be?
if you could touch this pain would it be hot or cold to the touch?
if this pain had a weight how heavy or light would it be?
if this pain had a sound, what sound would it be?

After you have answered the above questions (go with what ever comes to mind because something will believe me!) focus once more on the pain that you were experiencing and you may well be surprised at how it has already decreased! Mark this new level and if you need to, go through the exercise again and you will find that each time you do this the details will change and your pain will decrease!

After a further session with my client we were able to locate the cause of her emotional pain and released this successfully with EFT and hypnotherapy. My client had begun her sessions very sceptical indeed and was relieved to discover that the pain had indeed been emotional and not physical, because now she was pain free.

EFT, hypnotherapy and NLP do also help manage physical pain as well as help the healing process too. So next time you get a twinge or a niggle, try this simple and quick exercise and release that pain!

Beat The Blues The Simple Way

Depression is an illness and it a state of mind. Some sufferers prefer to believe that they are ‘depressed’ as opposed to suffering from depression, Those that constantly refer to themselves as ‘depressed’ are far less likely to overcome their illness, largely due to the fact that they have allowed their illness to define them, now be a part of them that can be released and believe you me there is a difference.

If you suffer from depression and would like nothing better than to wallow in the depths of despair, claiming ‘there is nothing I can do it’s just who I am’ then feel free to carry on however if you want to feel better and begin to enjoy life again then you can!

Depression is a state of mind which can be ‘managed’ somewhat with antidepressants however that isn’t really living is it? If depression is a state of mind then does it not make sense that you can change your ‘state of mind’ to improve how you feel? Of course you can!

The first step to any recovery is admitting that you have a problem. Once you do this then the next step can be considerably easier as most of us don’t like to admit we have a ‘problem’ especially a mental health one.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to overcome depression is to make a commitment to yourself to do something each day that you enjoy AND if preferable, that takes you out of the house, even if it is just a walk to the corner shop! Keep your targets small to begin with if confidence is an issue and literally if that means a walk round the block or to the end of the road then great because at least you have made the first step on the road to recovery! And CONGRATULATE YOURSELF FOR THIS!

A walk is a wonderful way to get out of the house and feel better. When you are out enjoy the walk! Notice what you can see, hear all the sounds that you can hear and perhaps even notice what you can smell – perhaps the flowers are in bloom or rain is on the way – but open up your senses and really live in the moment and appreciate every second of the walk.

By focusing on your external environment you are leaving behind those negative thoughts for a while by bringing your attention around to something else and the more you do this, the better you will begin to feel. Living in the moment, appreciating your surrounding, taking time to really taste and savour your food slowly, or simply watching the rain falling can all help you shift up a gear.

Mindfullness or living in the moment, as it is also known is a powerful way to help raise our vibration – by focusing on the beauty around us we are no longer focusing on the pain or negativity inside. If you struggle to get out then start by doing something inside the house (other than watching TV as this is NOT living in the moment!). Spend time focusing on a task or do something you enjoy like painting, singing or dancing – anything that makes you feel better and takes your mind off your thoughts.

If you make a commitment to yourself to so something that you enjoy doing for 10 – 15 minutes each day you will begin to notice a difference after a week and as your confidence grows then increase this time and push yourself too. If you find it hard leaving the house then walk round the garden each day but push yourself a little further each day and remember always to congratulate yourself on what you have accomplished!

Depression exists because we spend most of our time in our ‘heads’ going over and over negative thoughts/events/situations etc. and by taking time to focus on what you enjoy each day you are leaving behind your negative thought patterns and taking time to enjoy life ‘on the outside’.
